KERRY SHEARER

at the Joel Gallery, Cornwall

Kerry lives and works in land-locked Lincolnshire though many of her paintings capture the beauty and the energy of coastal seaside locations.

Having always seen herself as an artist, Kerry spent over two decades teaching in the primary classroom. Quietly working away on her art in a few spare precious hours when at home; her teaching posts allow her opportunities to express her creative side. Gradually the art took over; being called upon to create commissions both for schools and private clients.

Through hard work and dedication, Kerry recently had the good fortune to become a fulltime artist and grabbed the opportunity.

Her artistic style is typical of the British Naïves. She captures the landscapes and seascapes she paints in wide range of acrylics and finishes. Her unique, quirky, whimsical style is one which she is deeply proud of having honed it over many years. Each piece is instantly recognisable as hers.

Having lived as far away as China Kerry’s artwork has always sought to capture the imagination of the viewer and make a connection with them, whether they recognise the place or not. Her distorted perspective may challenge but isn’t intimidating; her choice of colour thought-provoking but not disagreeable. But it is these aspects that entice the viewer in for a closer look.

Her work is in fact joyful, playful and appeals to our ‘Inner Child’ in the same vein as all good Naïve Artists.

The scale of her work is as varied as her brushstrokes. Having created pieces as large 10ft high wall murals and then as tiny as 3inches. In applying the paint she has used wide rollers to cocktail sticks; Anything which can achieve the effects she is looking for in the scene which she is creating.

Each piece is signed off but is also completed with a tiny ladybird called Virginia Boo; once she appears, Kerry knows the painting is complete – always a tricky task for any artist.

Kerry now works out of a dedicated garden studio listening to a variety of podcasts and audiobooks.
